
Guide to higher education in Ukraine
Ukrainian education is considered to be one of the best in the world given it’s long and rich history. Higher educational institutions in Ukraine were first established in the 17th century and even then attracted students from all over the world. Experienced teachers and professors, a great diversity of specialties and European standards of quality make Ukrainian education popular among students worldwide.
In 2005, Ukraine joined the Bologna Process which is a positive step towards integrating Ukrainian education into the European Higher Education Area.
Ukrainian higher education institutions provide courses in Ukrainian, Russian or English. International students have the opportunity to study in more than 240 higher education institutions and gain specializations in different scientific fields. Every year, higher educational institutions welcome students from more than 150 countries.
Ukrainian higher educational institutions provide the following levels of higher education:
First level: Junior Bachelor (Bachelor)
Second level: Master
Third level: Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Science
Foreigners can enroll in higher educational institutions with accredited educational programs the following ways:
1) Twice a year for the degrees of Junior Bachelor, Bachelor and Master, before and at the beginning of the academic semester, that is until 1 November and until 1 March respectively;
2) During the year for postgraduate studies, doctoral studies, clinical studies, medical residency, the preparatory faculty program and the academic mobility program.

Invitation letter
All international applicants coming to Ukraine intending to study must obtain a student visa, which is only possible upon receiving an “Invitation to study” from the university they are applying to. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine defines the standard of the invitation letter.
l. Required Documents for invitation:
In order to receive student’s invitation letter you will have to provide with the following information and the following personal documents by e-mail this information:
1. Name, Surname.
2. Citizenship.
3. Date & place of birth.
4. Sex.
5. Passport number.
6. Passport validity (date of issue & expiry).
7. Permanent address.
8. Phone number, e-mail address.
9. Country where you are going to obtain your visa.
10. A copy of the passport (pages with the photograph, date of birth and passport validity (date of issue & expiry).
11. A copy of Certificate of Completed Higher Secondary Education.
Invitation applications are accepted from the end of May every year until first of November. It takes from 5 to 10 days to process the documents with the Ministry of Higher Education of Ukraine.
ll. Required documents for Visa:
Upon receiving the invitation letter, the student must contact the Embassy of Ukraine in his / her country in order to apply for the student’s visa. The list of documents to be submitted at Ukrainian Embassy:
1.The original invitation of the University sent to you by express post.
2.The Secondary School Certificate including mark sheet (legalized* original or legalized notarized copy).
3.The Birth Certificate (legalized* original or legalized notarized copy).
4.The latest Health Certificate (legalized original).
NOTE: The validity of this certificate is 2 months only.
5.The AIDS test Certificate.
NOTE: The validity of this certificate is 3 months only.
6.Official bank documents confirming full payment of tuition fees (for students coming to Ukraine for the first time)
7.3 photographs (3x4cm)
8.Translations to Ukrainian/Russian language of the documents given in p. 2-5.
We suggest you to keep in touch with Ukrainian embassy in your country regarding all visa questions. These requirements in different countries may vary.
* Legalized means:
1.Secondary School Certificate has to be legalized in the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
2.Birth Certificate and Health Certificate have to be legalized in Ukrainian Embassy.
lll. For students obtaining admission to the preparatory faculty or the first year:
1. Complete Higher Secondary School Certificate (including mark sheet) or a notarized copy;
2. Medical health certificate
3. The AIDS test Certificate
4. 15 passport size (3×4 cm) photographs

1. We pay your attention to the procedure of passing an entry point in the airport. Besides your passport and visa the border services (customs) check the set of the documents necessary for admission to the university and on the base of which Visa was given for you, these are : invitation, birth certificate, medical certificate, medical certificate of AIDS examination, school leaving certificate with extract of given marks. All the documents are to be legalized in the embassy. That’s why the student is to keep all these documents with him at hand luggage and not to check in his language.
2. Also we need to pay your attention that both medical certificates are valid for a period of 2 months by law. Accordingly, if a student was executing his documents for a long time and at passing an entry point, his medical certificates will be expired, in this case, he will have to again execute his medical certificates and to legalize them in the embassy.
3. Also, please, inform us in two weeks before your arrival to Ukraine.

1. How can I get a visa if there is no Embassy of Ukraine in my country?

2. What is a visa support letter?
A visa support letter is detailed information from us sent to the Embassy of Ukraine located in your country to confirm that your invitation to study is genuine.
3. Can I come to study in Ukraine on a tourist visa?
No, if you are coming to study in a Ukrainian university, you must come on a student visa (which requires an invitation letter first).
4. If I have an invitation letter to study, can my parents or relatives come with me?
No, the invitation letter is a document issued to you alone. However, you can apply to the University for a Personal Invitation Letter for your parents or relatives.
5. How long is the visa application process?
Typically, the visa application process is around ten working days. Sometimes this can be prolonged to 30 working days.

It typically takes one to four weeks for the invitation letter to be issued, depending on your university of choice and how long it takes for your documents to be cleared by Ukrainian authorities.
4. How long is the invitation letter valid for?
The invitation letter is valid up to 6 months. This information is mentioned in the invitation letter.
5. Can anyone cancel my invitation letter?
Only universities can cancel your invitation letter upon your personal request. If you don’t know which university issued you the invitation letter, please send us a copy of your passport and the invitation letter to help clarify the situation.
6. Do you register or notarize translated documents?
No, any registration or notarization of documents must be completed by a notary.
7. Can my parents or relatives pay for my study?
Yes, your parents or relatives can pay for your study.
8. What is the socio-economic situation in Ukraine?
Ukraine is a safe and tolerant country with friendly people and a European atmosphere. In May 2017, the annual Eurovision Song Contest was hosted in Kyiv and seen as a great success. As of 11 June 2017, Ukrainian citizens are granted to travel visa-free to the EU and the Schengen area, except for the UK and Ireland.
9. Can I work during my study?
No, unfortunately it is illegal for international students in Ukraine to work while studying.
